Leiran grew up here in Massachusetts and moved to Somerville in 2007, living in Teele Square since 2011. He and his wife Anna have two children in the Somerville Public Schools, both of whom attended the West Somerville Neighborhood School. His oldest child is now a student at Somerville High.
Before his election to School Committee in 2023, he was an active member of the WSNS community, serving on the board of the Parent Teacher Association for seven years, including three years as President.
On the board, he led the charge for building a safer and better schoolyard for our students at the West Somerville Neighborhood School.
He also pioneered an inclusive and innovative membership model at the WSNS PTA to make membership free to all. There should be no barriers to parents who want to be active at their children’s school.
During the paraprofessional negotiations, Leiran stood with educators in their fight for fair wages.
As President of the Somerville PTA Council, he worked with parent leaders across Somerville to raise up parent voices and advocate for the changes they want to see.
He established a tracking system to hold city leaders accountable for their commitments to our communities.
Leiran collaborated to put out a neutral survey about safety and student supports in our schools to provide real data to inform the contentious public debate about police in schools.
In 2022, Leiran represented our community on Somerville's American Rescue Plan Act Advisory Committee to guide pandemic recovery spending to support youth and families.
In his day job as a scientist for EPA, he manages a team of scientists who collect and analyze water, soil, and air samples to ensure a clean safe and healthy environment for all New Englanders.
